driving up the Hume freeway

moments like this

remind me why

i am alive.

witnessing the countryside

pass us by

as we’re driving

up the Hume freeway;

a family of cows

a team of horses.

the majesty of the

Australian landscape,

the sudden awareness of its

unyielding nature,

is incandescent.

we seem so minuscule

when confronted with the vastness

of our home.

the towering

evergreen

eucalypts

are the only source

of salvation

from the blinding Australian

sun.

in the car

with the air con on full

we laugh;

driving by Maccas

to get that cheeseburger meal,

we take a photograph

with our middle fingers up

to the world.

moments like this

remind me why

i am alive.
