I’m bringing a little something different today!!!
As I’m writing this, I literally just got, and I mean just got, my Owlcrate April Box in the post and yes, I received it in May and is ultimately confusing the fuck out of me – BUT IT WAS THE APRIL EDITION.
April’s Owlcrate theme was ‘The Dark Side’ and holy shit I did not expect to like it as much as I did!
Now, a couple of months ago I was unsure as to whether or not I should purchase this box, because I’m going to be completely honest with you…it ain’t cheap. It cost me $70 AUD which for me, is an amount that I can’t spare easily, ya know? But I so badly wanted to try and see what an Owlcrate book box was like, and experience it first hand instead of watching ‘unboxings’ on YouTube.
Though, shout out to BooksWithChloe for always coming through with cute unboxings!
So let’s get down to what y’all really want to know: Is it worth it?
This is going to be purely subjective, so everything I say is going to be based upon my own opinions and immediate first impressions!
For me, this box was worth it.
Everything that I took out of the box was something that surprised me and made me extremely happy. Though there were some that I was like ‘ummm okay pretty but usability is low for me’, I still thoroughly enjoyed everything that was in the box.
Was it worth $70 AUD? Yes.
But is it necessary? No.
Look, if I had to decide whether or not to buy food or bills, or purchase this box? I would go without the box. Periodt.
But it did bring me joy. So much joy.
Why I say this is both because of how happy I was when I unboxed it (THE LIVE UNBOXING IS ON MY INSTAGRAM CHECK IT OUT), but also in terms of on a ‘monetary value’ kind of aspect concerning the products received in the box.
Let’s break it down. Again, not accurate but based on some rudimentary research I did!
First and foremost, the exclusive Hardback Owlcrate Signed edition of The Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan. Let me put this into perspective, I went to my local Readings bookstore a few weeks ago and I saw a beautiful Hardback edition of Skyward by Brandon Sanderson and I was like HELL YEA give me that so I can devour it. It cost $49.95 AUD. PRACTICALLY 50 DOLLARS FOR A HARDBACK THAT WASN’T EVEN A SPECIAL EDITION. Here in Australia, Hardbacks can retail between $35-50 AUD, depending I think on the demand, the bookstore or however books get priced – I legit have no idea. So let’s say, minimum $35 AUD for the exclusive signed Owlcrate Hardcover book.
Next item is an epic Vicious by V.E. Schwab pop socket for your phone. It has a quote from the book and is bloody awesome, I love it. A cursory look at Etsy for bookish pop sockets show that pop sockets with a quote on it, be that bookish or motivational, can be between $5-15 Australian buckaroos. For the purpose of this, we’ll say the Vicious pop socket will be $5 (although, more like $10, but bear with me).
Next, we have an epic Sarah J. Maas inspired notebook that is exclusive to Owlcrate. Back on Etsy I am, and the closest I could find are Throne of Glass/ACOTAR notebooks of similar size that range within the $20 AUD mark. That’s not including the shipping, goddamn.
So now we have like $10 AUD left and we still have the Six of Crows socks, the Grisha inspired scarf, the mini The Wicked Saints scarf thing as well as the Owlcrate enamel pin, the Owlcrate Pin banner and the exclusive early access chapter of Finale by Stephanie Garber.
So, in terms of money – it’s definitely worth it for people who love books and all the bookish things!
I don’t regret purchasing it, but I think I might make like ‘review of book boxes’ a series here on my blog! The next one will be Fairyloot (yes, I splurged because I wanted to see what it was like, that book box costed me $80 AUD, so we shall see if it lives up to the hype). I’m excited and I hope this was enjoyable for you! If you want to see me scream about the things in the box, make sure to check out my instagram!
However, it is a lot of money to just spend on things you don’t really need! So you have to think whether or not it’s worth it for you (and if you can afford it!). Honestly, it’s only been because of my job this year that I’m in a position where I can kind of spare $70 on something that’s a pure indulgence. Because that’s what it is. An indulgence. Will I keep the subscription? Most likely not as a forever thing because it is a lot of money, so I’ll keep you posted!
Scribd hit me up!
That’s it for today, friends! Until next time, happy reading!
All the love,
