The Questions…

1. Which book did you most recently DNF?

I really intensely hate DNFing books because I always feel so much guilt about not finishing a book. But there are some books that I literally cannot finish at all, and instead of pushing myself and dreading having to read it – I have slowly learnt that it’s okay to stop reading. Most recently, I think I have DNF’d was one actually for bookclub, called Eucalyptus by Murray Bail. Every time a book is referred to as both ‘Australian’ and ‘Classic’, it most likely means it is actually a terrible story but the writing is trying to do something different. Bail writes as though he thinks he’s good – he does not make sense and the story is ridiculous. Legitimately. I could not go on.

2. What book is your guilty pleasure?

Oooh, I don’t really know! Let me think…a guilty pleasure book. Hmm. If I love a book, I will literally scream it from the rooftops. So, I think a book that I have read over and over again for fun – aside from Nalini Singh books and Nora Roberts books – would have to be A Younger Man by Cameron Dane. I read this book back when I was in high school and realised that romance fiction was actually not only confined to heterosexual couples. It’s a really beautiful story about a man finding a second chance at love in the most unlikely of places, and finally being free. It’s one a highly recommend.

3. Which book would you throw into the sea?

This question is making me laugh so hard, oh my god. Unfortunately, there are a few, but the one that pushes itself at the forefront of my mind would have to be The Brewer’s Tale by Karen Brooks. I tried liking it, I really did. It was historical fiction and I felt that the female character was going to be strong and awesome. But instead, I get a book where literally everything that can happen to a woman, happens. I understand the need for like, tragedy to push forward the narrative and jump start character growth, but in this case it was so ridiculously stupid. I found the main character, Anneke to be underwhelming and the story itself boring. I had such high hopes too! But I would literally throw this book off a pier. 

4. Which book have you read the most?

This is a tricky one! I’m going to have to say that my most read book/series would have to be a tie between the Chesapeake Bay Quartet by Nora Roberts and the Guildhunter series by Nalini Singh. I love both of them so much and they are my ultimate favourites that I would read just to feel better, or get out of a reading slump. They’re just quality books in a fantastic series. 

5. Which book would you hate to receive as a present?

Okay, this one is easy. Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James. 

It is a horrible written book than does nothing in accurately representing the BDSM community and Christian is literally the most disgusting romantic male character to have ever been written. If you want erotica, but with an actual fabulous storyline with good, solid characters – literally read any other romance novel in existence. Honestly. Christine Feehan, Nalini Singh, Gena Showalter, J.R. Ward – literally anything is better written.

6. Which books could you not live without?

Ok, like all of my Nora Roberts books, all of my Nalini Singh books, all my my poetry/feminist/history books and my classics. They would have to be the books that I will take everywhere with me because I cannot part with them – they are so important to me and represent so much to me! I don’t think I could only pinpoint one series that I could not live without. 

7. Which book made you the angriest?

I’ll say a book that most recently made me super angry was A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. If you’ve read my review you will know that this book gave me a lot of feelings, and not necessarily good ones. I was so frustrated with Diana’s character!! She was super annoying and the entire narrative centred around her being ‘chosen’ but not wanting anything to do with magic because her life is so hard, etc. And don’t get me started on Matthew. It was just an annoying story with annoying characters and it was overall, yep you guessed it, annoying. 

8. Which book made you cry the most?

I literally cry with every book I read. I’m a really easy crier. I just cried now watching Criminal Minds. I cry when I watch Carrie Underwood music videos. In saying that, I think the most recent book that made me cry like a little baby was The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. It was a magnificent novel, one that I made my mum read the very next day I finished it. I cried, I laughed; it was a maelstrom of emotions and it was so utterly fabulous. 

9. Which book cover do you hate the most?

I don’t think there is a particular book cover that I dislike. I’m trying to think. Hmm. I don’t think there has been a book that I purely don’t like because of its book cover! I’m sorry, y’all!
